I respect classical, and enjoy listening to much of it, and like to read about the composers. But I've always had one underlying issue with classical.....
We are unable to hear the 'definitive' version of it. There was no recording equipment in Mozart's time, so we never get to hear HIS version of it.
All other musical genres we're supposed to appreciate (jazz, blues, the Beatles, whatever) we can hear the composer's original recordings. We can't with Beethoven, etc. I know some will say that Rubinoff is the best recorded Chopin, and they may be right, but it's not Chopin playing, you know what I mean?
It sounds odd, but this is what keeps me from going headfirst into classical.
